Synopsis

All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power.

Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them.

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.

Review

I’m going to try not to gush about this book but I can’t help how brilliant it was!

This book is absolutely amazing. One of my favorite things about this story (other than the magic) was the magical grimoires that are basically living books. I felt like I was Elisabeth, immersed in this stunning and sometimes dark world. The depth Margaret Rogerson goes to establish the plot and characters is remarkable – especially considering this is a stand-alone.

The concept of this book is gorgeous and unique but really stood out to me was the beautiful writing that completely immerses the reader in this world of magic. The world that this story is set in, lends itself to the epic fantasy that we get. An extremely exciting and nail-biting story which is full of wonderful moments and deep emotions.

I adored the characters in this novel! From the get-go, I loved Elisabeth’s character. She is such a strong character who adores books. Throughout the story, we see people underestimate her and she always perseveres, proving them wrong at every turn. There are two other characters that are worth a mention – Nathaniel and Silas. And without spoiling anything, both of their character arcs in this book were brilliantly done.

This story is so fulfilling and well-written that it is definitely one of my favorite reads this year. The characters and plot are intricately carved into a wonderful, beautiful story that will not be easy to forget.

The ending of this book was mindblowing and had me in tears – of sadness and happiness and I had so many feelings in this book! And THE LAST LINE – my poor heart could not handle that last line!

Happy Reading !
