The Pageant was fast paced, easy to read, and always exciting. I love Leigh Walker and her books are always a great way to spend the holiday.

I did a review for Premonition by Leigh Walker which was a very different genre but still so uniquely Leigh Walker’s work.

Synopsis

Who’s the fairest of them all?
Young women from every settlement in the land are being handpicked to enter The Pageant, a beauty contest reminiscent of Miss Universe from the old days. Gwyneth West’s social-climbing mother wants her to compete, by Gwyn isn’t so sure…
The Pageant is government-sponsored. If you’re lucky enough to be chosen, participation is mandatory. Aggressive competition is allowed, even encouraged.

And then there’s the prize…
The winner of The Pageant gets a marriage proposal from Dallas Black, otherwise known as The Dark Prince. Dallas is the son of King Black, who won the last world war and now governs the new settlements. The Royal Family is mysterious. Rumor has it they don’t sleep. Rumor has it they eschew the sun.
Rumor has it they’re immortal.
When Gwyn is thrust into The Pageant, she fights to survive the competitive nature of the other contestants.
But even if wins…can she survive a vampire fiancé?

My Review

Leigh Walker’s style of writing is fun and easy to read. I read this book in less than 24 hours because it’s exciting and always kept me intrigued.

Gwyneth West was a character full of contradictions. She was rebellious yet delicate. She is strong and unrelenting in her beliefs. Although at some moments her actions frustrated me, all humans make mistakes and of course, characters are humans too.

I loved the Dark Prince’s character. He is kind, protective and the handsome factor doesn’t hurt. The vampire aspect of this book was really intriguing as I never know just what an author is going to bring to the table but I really was interested in the way that Leigh Walker portrayed vampires. Of course, this book was only the first in the series so there are lots of aspects that were hinted at that will likely play a major role in the next few books.

This book was also a little humorous. A quote from the beginning of the sequel is the perfect way to sum up the book. “The Pageant was one-third beauty competition, one-third dating show, and one-third survival Bootcamp.”

I enjoyed this book and always love a quick, easy read from Leigh Walker. I’m hoping to get to the sequel soon!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Happy Reading !
